SixThousand is a weekly snapshot of Perth's subculture - a Perth guide to film, music, design, books, art, goods and links for people who realise that the best things in life are often hard to find. Below you will find the latest additions to our Perth guide.
The advertising in a magazine is often a fairly accurate indication of the publication's target audience. So, after leafing through the first few pages of Habitus it became abundantly clear that I do not fall within that demographic.
It's not for a lack of interest in contemporary designer homewares, rather that my present financial situation precludes any active involvement in the world that Habitus represents.
Jamie Stewart's band Xiu Xiu are intense. Actively experimental yet equally rock, they juxtapose noise and industrial sounds with hooks and riffs making music that's disorienting, heavy, intoxicating, and beautiful. With lyric matter pulled from real life events - in the band member's lives, or people close to them - their songs alternate between creepy, sad, cryptic, poignant, and funny.
Ant farms (or formicariums, if your dad is a scientist) are not new. They are, however, on the cusp of being shit-hot right now. The enduring appeal of the ant farm is proven by the ongoing popularity of the (now irrelevant) George Orwell novel of the same name.
An ant farm is simply a sand-filled vivarium with glass on either side so you can clearly observe your prisoners.
Personally, I choose not to shave. It's tedious, painful and makes me look like some kind of prepubescent bootlicker. Instead, I opt for a perpetual shadow of closely cropped growth. However, my sense of curiosity often outweighs my sense of better judgement, which is how I found myself being shaved by a girl.

SixThousand is a subcultural guide to Perth, published daily and fired by email weekly. It is compiled by an amorphous gaggle of Perth writers, stylists, designers and photographers who all like huddling under that big umbrella we like to call creativity. Without editorial independence SixThousand has nothing. All editorial you read is featured because it's worth it - not because it's paid for.
