SixThousand is a weekly snapshot of Perth's subculture - a Perth guide to film, music, design, books, art, goods and links for people who realise that the best things in life are often hard to find. Below you will find the latest additions to our Perth guide.
When I was in the Czech Republic I was staying in this tiny town called Libcice. My friend was throwing a party in his garden and it was -10C outside. Needless to say he was an idiot, but just as I was about to tell him so, he offered me a glass of mulled wine. 12 glasses later I was sitting naked in a man(me)-made swimming pool in his backyard constructed using a branch for a shovel.
My friend's brother is colour blind, which goes some way in explaining why he uses extra bright colours and weirdly camp hues for his emasculated version of street art. I can't say much for how often he gets beat up on for his unintentional Nancy-boy artistry but he certainly stands out among the boyish blues and greens of his less impaired painting peers.
If you've woken up in a strange bed after Friday night and can't remember what you did to get there, Fear not! You can start fresh at Tonic with breakfast at any hour of the day come Saturday.
Tonic reminds me of a café or two along Lexington Avenue on New York's Upper West Side: comfort and coffee on one side of the window, energy and antique stores on the other.
Auction houses are the province of the classy. I envision middle-aged British gentlemen with eccentric bowties and James Mason hair, standing behind a podium, presiding over seated bidders competitively holding up ping-pong paddles. All in the effort to purchase original x-rays of Marilyn Monroe's chest.
