SixThousand is a weekly snapshot of Perth's subculture - a Perth guide to film, music, design, books, art, goods and links for people who realise that the best things in life are often hard to find. Below you will find the latest additions to our Perth guide.
Hair is an anomaly, when you think about it. Grown on your head, it's a prized mane of beauty and health. But in your soup, it's on par with fingernails and band-aids - something foreign and gross.
That is, until local lass Jessyca Hutchens takes said hair from someone else's head (that is, not literally - via a supplier) and weaves it together with silk, leather and silver into ethereal neckpieces, earrings and tassels.
When it came time to throw a bush dance party, my housemates and I were faced with one very serious problem. We had the matching tracksuits, Rivers. Synthetic Akubra hat knock offs. Didgeridoo remix album. Even a bush band out the front of the house. But we couldn't find quandong jam for the damper, and everyone knows you can't have a bush dance party without quandong jam and damper.
When trawling through the nets looking for sites to buy cool art magazines to strategically place on your coffee table, it's way too damn often that independent publishers' websites are arty to the point of obscurity - most of the time you can't tell what's inside any of those magazines until you get them.
Now that the bandages are slowly peeling off Northbridge's facelift and the swelling is going down after the punch of losing favourites like Harry Highpants and LaLaOrange, William St is starting to look pretty hot again. How hot? Well, there's a new cultural space, a Bird that's deffo learnt how to fly and a neato café not gladwrapped in commercial stink.

SixThousand is a subcultural guide to Perth, published daily and fired by email weekly. It is compiled by an amorphous gaggle of Perth writers, stylists, designers and photographers who all like huddling under that big umbrella we like to call creativity. Without editorial independence SixThousand has nothing. All editorial you read is featured because it's worth it - not because it's paid for.
