Here's my idea of a challenge: drawing a dragonfly. Here's my idea of a super challenge: drawing a dragonfly by making thousands of pricks with a tiny needle ink pen (‘stippling', if you will). The winner of today's challenge is local artist Tané Andrews. Tané is still a pup who goes dancing on the weekends but has got the big wigs (ie the WA Art Gallery) chasing him for his stuff.
Answer us this: how can the dude who did the totally cute double-headed dog on the Third Drawer Down tea towel be the same dude who draws weird runt-ish monkey babies, owls raping baby cherubs and bulls with boa constrictors where their private parts are? Everybody has an inner pervert, but you've gotta wonder about a guy who who sits around doing detailed drawings of mermaids (*cough* mer-MEN.
During primary school, my mum used to grapple with ways to keep my juice box cold in summer. Nobody likes lukewarm Sunshine Punch, but freezing it made the sandwhiches soggy as it melted. Or worse, the juice box wouldn't unfreeze at all - thirsty times ahoy. Finally Mum resorted to a bit of creative problem solving - wrapping a paper napkin around the juicebox to soak up the ice - the sandwiches stayed dry, I stayed hydrated.
I worked in a real quiet art gallery shop for about a year. The lack of customers left me plenty of time to do stuff, like dust invisible dust off glass shelves, or stare into space. When staring into space got boring, another good time killer was thumbing through ARAKI, an encyclopaedic brick of mainly B&W stills from Japanese photographer Nobuyoshi Araki.
You might already know that Sarah Larnach does incredible things with water colours. She's created album artwork for Ladyhawke, illustrations for Amanda Maxwell's book, Nobody Told Me There'd Be Days Like These, worked at Michel Gondry's Partizan Studio and exhibited in galleries here and overseas.
It's easy to see how picnics got a bad rep. Sitting in stinking hot sun on scratchy grass watching Grandpa drool potato salad from underneath his terry towelling hat doesn't exactly shout ‘these are the good times'.
Garden/Art/Action is putting an end to bad picnicking experiences. As of today, The Stirling Gardens (the one with the bronze kangaroos) are set to transform into a giant gallery space (or, if you prefer the wanky pants term, an "agora" meaning "open public space for expressive exchange of acts, ideas and opinions").
The taste of my own saliva makes me sick and scabs disgust me, but my mouth hasn't gone anywhere and my wounds haven't healed for all the picking. Unrelated? Perhaps, but we suspect that Gian Manik's fascination with horror films and their growing connection to his work will appeal to anyone with a weird fetish or appreciation for the uncanny.
