Bomb It! - Jon Reiss interview
In the year 1992, I was in Year One. When you're six, you don't have many dark thoughts. It's mostly super happy stuff like 'so glad I swapped that pelony and sauce sandwich for a metre of rainbow Roll Up'. I did wish a million years' bad luck upon the kid in my class who urinated in my personal pencil tin, but that's hardly demonic, right?
I'll tell you who was having dark thoughts in 1992 - director Jon Reiss.
I Am Love
Luca Guadagnino's film is self-consciously overblown, apparently aiming for Greek, Biblical or Shakespearean tragedy. It's also a pet project for Tilda Swinton, who produced and learned both Italian and Russian for her starring role. But those uninterested in cinematic artifice might find it silly and pretentious.
Future Shorts - Perth's Red Carpet Launch
You know what's shit? Going to a premiere of a crap film. Unlike a crap film at the cinema, where you can just walk out, when you're at a premiere there's this expectation that you watch it 'til the end. Someone important like the director is probs in the crowd, so walking out would be the equivalent of being at an art exhibition and saying to the person next to you ‘well, this one's shite.
Bunny and the Bull
Stephen Turnbull (Edward Hogg) is an anxious nerd who hasn't left his flat since a disastrous European holiday with his ebullient best mate Bunny (Simon Farnaby). When his stock of vegetarian lasagne runs out, Stephen is forced to order in from awful seafood chain Captain Crab, leading him to relive his trauma.
'Bigger and Blackerer', David Cross
You know your one friend who is super smart, really funny, and fairly cynical? And when he's had a few drinks and he gets on a roll about the sheer stupidity of modern life, it's unbelievably hilarious and depressingly spot-on?
That's David Cross. You may have seen him as the consistently rib-tickling Tobias from Arrested Development; or, if you were lucky, you caught some of his hilariously surreal, fall-down-laughing funny HBO sketch comedy show, Mr.
The A-Team
It's a shame The A-Team hits cinemas so soon after The Losers. Both kablooey-tastic movies feature a wisecracking, wronged elite military team trying to take down the evil insider who framed them. Both favour complex capers full of subterfuge and split-second timing. Both introduce each team member with an awesome freeze-frame.
Exit Through The Gift Shop
Banksy is street art's Scarlet Pimpernel, and compulsively camera-toting Frenchie Thierry Guetta seeks him here and seeks him there. Or does he? As Banksy - who appears onscreen with his face in darkness and his voice digitally camouflaged, said in his director's statement: "Everything you are about to see is true, especially the bit where we all lie.
